The District of Kansas and Western District of Missouri Chapter of the Federal Bar Association (“FBA”) is offering a 1-hour CLE, July 7, 2022 at 1:00 pm, “The First Amendment and the Banning of Books.” The program will feature a panel discussion, moderated by Eric Weslander (attorney at Stevens Brand in Lawrence, KS), with Deborah Caldwell-Stone, director of the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom, and Gillian Wilcox, deputy director of litigation with the Missouri ACLU, which is currently litigating various book bans. This CLE is part of a larger full-day professional development program for educators on topics including the Bill of Rights, the First Amendment, and the Freedom of Expression in particular, sponsored by the Kansas First Amendment Foundation, Kansas Department of Education, KSU Center for Civic Education and Fort Hays State University.
Participation is available via Zoom or, for a limited number, in person (determined by the first to apply).
Those attending in person have the option of also attending a luncheon commencing at 12:00 (noon) during which a video produced by the FBA regarding the 1995 District of Kansas landmark case, Case v. Unified School District 233 (ordering the Olathe School District to put the banned book “Annie On My Mind” back on the bookshelves) will be shown publicly for the first time. The video includes interviews of two of the named Plaintiffs, Plaintiffs’ counsel, and one of Defendant’s counsel, who actually tried Case v. Unified School District 233, nearly 30 years ago.
